About Fabric Face Masks

As per NBC News (April 3, 2020): “Friday afternoon, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated its guidance on the matter, recommending individuals use cloth face coverings "in public settings where other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain," such as grocery stores and pharmacies. The guidance recommends people use fabric coverings, not surgical masks or specialized N95 masks, which should be reserved for health care providers.

Face coverings made of fabric, public health experts note, aren't intended to protect wearers from getting sick, but rather, to prevent them from spreading the virus to others. And the guidance will still exclude using surgical or medical grade masks, which experts say should be reserved for people who are sick and for the health care workers who care for them.”

Care Recommendations

We recommend that you gently wash your mask before using and after every use in HOT water in a tub, lay flat or hang to dry, do not wring. They absolutely can be machine washed, but if you want to preserve the life of your mask, gentle hand washing is recommended. The author hangs hers to drip dry.

In Appreciation

We'd like to express our sincere gratitude to Gail Harding, Wendy Lewis Harvieux, Cheryl Denton, Annette Lowe and Sandy McGill for the donation of numerous hand-crafted fabric face masks to Friends of Ferals for fundraising.

We'd also like to thank volunteers who have helped our team sew face masks: Rikki Clements, Sheila Bulmer, Loretta Crocker, Heather Crocker Titus Prime, MaryJo Mym and Sue Dexter-White.

Annette Lowe has also donated a lot of fabric, including Cool Cats, Mermaids and countless other fabrics. Sylvia Harron donated an impressive collection of cat themed fabric, shipped all the way from BC! We also wish to thank Nancy Simpson for her large bag of fabric featuring cats, dogs and bunnies.

To date, FOF has sold over 2,000 masks and shipped to destinations throughout Nova Scotia and across Canada.
