Founded in 2002, Society for the Friends of Ferals was incorporated as a Non-Profit Organization registered with the Registry of Joint Stocks in July 2003. Effective March 19, 2018, we are now a Registered Charity with the Charities Directorate. Our Charitable Registration # is 88260 9308 RR0001.
We are a small group of volunteers. Our mission is to help control the overpopulation of cats by spaying and neutering feral cats, and cats that are homeless because they have been abandoned or have become lost. We help cats from Bear River to Brier Island, including the Town of Digby.
Feral (wild, unadoptable) cats are trapped, spayed or neutered, and then returned to their colonies where we ensure they are sheltered and fed daily. If we are able to catch feral kittens at a young age, we foster them (or arrange for them to be fostered) until they are tame and adoptable. We do our best to find good homes for homeless cats that are tame. On occasion, a cat that is otherwise adoptable might need veterinary treatment (for example, dental surgery) beyond the usual spay/neuter. In those cases we hold separate fundraisers, so donors are clear where their donations are going.
Since we began our work, we have had over 1,367 cats surgically altered and rescued countless other cats and kittens that were found abandoned and in many cases injured. Consider that one female cat can have three litters of up to five kittens per litter in a year. We are proud that we have prevented many helpless animals from enduring needless suffering.
Our funds for veterinary treatment and food are raised through sales of home made crafts made by volunteers, donations, bequests, special fundraising events, and grants from the Municipality of Digby, the Town of Digby, and the CanFel Foundation. We could not continue our services without this help and are sincerely appreciative of all the support we receive.
